Joseph Cordery

Joseph Cordery is an ancestor of my brother-in-law – I spent this morning searching out some information on him and his family.

Joseph was born in 1800 in Richmond, Surrey. He married Mary Chuter in 1824 – before civil registrations, but I found them in Piggot’s Marriage Index.

Mary died in 1826, and on 7 January 1827 he married Mary Ann Chalcroft in Teddington, Surrey.

I’ve found eight children, the youngest of which was Caroline Cordery, born 1851, from whom my brother-in-law is descended.

In the 1861 census, Mary is shown as head of the family – the only Joseph Cordery I can find in the census is in Richmond workhouse. The right age, but shown as a former servant – our Joseph was a labourer, so it doesn’t look like the right man. I haven’t ┬áchecked all his adult sons to see if he was living with them. I have found his death in 1869, in Richmond, but have only seen the index.
