Not exactly tennis, but this is my paternal grandfather (front left), with his darts team. I don’t know the date, but he was born in 1893, so this is probably about 1913. He was born in Camberwell Road, Peckham in London, and married in Wimbledon so the connection isn’t so tenuous! After his marriage he lived in Raynes Park, not far from Wimbledon. He died in 1954, aged only 61 – my only memory of him is from photos.

Thanks for joining us Dianne! That’s a fine photo of the darts team. Grandfather and his pals look a happy bunch.
Posted by Little Nell | June 30, 2012, 2:50 pmI’m not sure I’d want darts in a breast pocket, but your grandfather seems glad to have them.
Posted by Wendy | June 30, 2012, 3:09 pmThat’s a great picture … don’t the players look smart compared to pub dart players one might see today.
Posted by dakotaboo | June 30, 2012, 9:10 pmThey really dressed up to play darts – great photo!
Posted by Queen Bee | July 1, 2012, 3:03 amThey all look very pleased with themselves. The team must have won or they’ve had a few drinks? Maybe both?
Posted by Sharon | July 1, 2012, 7:35 amI would find it difficult to play darts in a suit and waistcoat.. I’ve played cricket on the dart board, now you have me wondering whether there is a darts game for tennis.
Posted by Bob Scotney | July 1, 2012, 2:27 pmI love it … darts! He looks happy with his team.

Posted by Kathy Matthews | July 1, 2012, 3:27 pmA very cool entry. Can’t wait to see more down the road.
Posted by smkelly8 | July 1, 2012, 4:28 pmI wonder whether they dressed like that just for the picture or whether that is what they wore when they played.
Posted by postcardy | July 1, 2012, 4:38 pmLooking at old UK photos, it’s common to see working men dressed like this in factories, shipyards, and similar. Boiler suits and denim weren’t common here until much later.
Posted by pramclub | July 3, 2012, 4:57 pmOh yes, darts is a very big thing over here! Great photo!
