  1. Hello. A few years ago I purchased an old home in Springville and we began lovingly restoring it. We spent weeks peeling off 13 layers of wallpaper in the main room and when we finally got to the bare plaster, there written in lovely hand was Ernest H. Carter March 22, 1898. We found his autograph in another wall as well. We love our home and I often think of it’s builder when we consider how to remodel and honor the house as well. I’ve seen Ernest’s grave, I know he died of heart failure at 35. But I would love to know more about him and his family.

    • Ernest Huntingdon Carter

Ernest was born 24 June 1871 in Springville. His parents were William Huntingdon Carter and Cordelia Lane. William was born in Thornton Hough, Cheshire, UK. William’s parents were Samuel Carter and Hannah Huntingdon, which is where the Huntingdon middle name comes from. Samuel and Hannah were Mormon pioneers, and emigrated in 1862 with their children. You can read about their journey at http://www.easter.byethost22.com/index.php/a-mormon-pioneer-family

His death certificate shows him as a blacksmith, and his “former or usual residence” as Virginia. He is shown as married, and I have details of two women – Lydia D Robinson, married 14 December 1893 in Spanish Fork, and Stella Jenkins, married 1893. I still need to research these – I think the information on Stella is incorrect.

I have three children for Ernest and Lydia. Elizabeth Carter, born 1 March 1895, died April 1958. Lydia Carter, born 8 October 1896, died 25 February 1971. Ernest Carter, born 23 December 1900, died 24 December 1900.

Ernest died 28 August 1906 in Springville, and as you know is buried in block 14, lot 4 position 1 in Springville Cemetary.

Ernest would be my third cousin twice removed – we share great-great grandparents, but I am two generations later than him.
