Sepia Saturday – Not Quite Tennis

William Ernest Easter – Darts Team

Not exactly tennis, but this is my paternal grandfather (front left), with his darts team. I don’t know the date, but he was born in 1893, so this is probably about 1913. He was born in Camberwell Road, Peckham in London, and married in Wimbledon so the connection isn’t so tenuous!  After his marriage he lived in Raynes Park, not far from Wimbledon. He died in 1954, aged only 61 – my only memory of him is from photos.

  1. Thanks for joining us Dianne! That’s a fine photo of the darts team. Grandfather and his pals look a happy bunch.

  2. I’m not sure I’d want darts in a breast pocket, but your grandfather seems glad to have them.

  3. That’s a great picture … don’t the players look smart compared to pub dart players one might see today.

  5. They all look very pleased with themselves. The team must have won or they’ve had a few drinks? Maybe both?

  6. I would find it difficult to play darts in a suit and waistcoat.. I’ve played cricket on the dart board, now you have me wondering whether there is a darts game for tennis.

  9. I wonder whether they dressed like that just for the picture or whether that is what they wore when they played.
