Technology Tuesday – HistoryPin

Another photo site, but not plain storage. HistoryPin‘s tagline is “Pin your history to the world”, and I’ve found it fascinating –  photos, videos and audio clips, relating them to places. A large number of museums and history organisations worldwide have already uploaded some of their archives, but there are lots of individuals adding content too.

You can create collections (photos on a topic, geographical area, family, etc), tours ( following a place through time, or exploring an area), and maps which lets you look at photos of a particular place. Their partner for mapping is Google, so you’ll see the little yellow man on some photos – this lets you see the photo superimposed on the Google Streetview, and a slider that lets you change the date.

Repeats are created using the Historypin Smartphone App. They are modern replicas of historic photos taken by other people, or modern replicas of other users photos taken by you.

Your account is called a “channel”, and your channel homepage can be customised easily. I’ve changed the colour scheme, added a banner to match my blog, and some wallpaper to replace the plain background.

I’ve pinned two photos, one of which is an outdoor scene that I’ve been able to add to the HistoryPin Streetview.

Each photo has the option to add notes (called “stories”), both by the person who uploads and by other HistoryPin users. This could be a valuable tool for family history researchers, helping to record the way our world has changed, and memories that people have of those places.

You can browse without signing up, and joining is free. There are no limits to the number of images you can upload at the moment, and there is a bulk uploader for archives to use.

  1. Hey! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from
    an established blog. Is it difficult to set up your own blog?
    I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks

    • I’m using WordPress, which is free. There are several others such as Blogger. Many are hosted on their own servers, so setup is easy. WordPress has both options – using their servers give fewer customisation choices, hosting it yourself has any more options. If you start on their servers, and later decide to host it yourself it’s easy to transfer. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ gives you information about WP, search Google for blogging will give lots of info on other choices. Look at your favourite blogs, and see what blogging program or service they are using, and read up that providers help and support to find one that suits you.
