My grandmother was born Gertrude Annie Merritt in Wimbledon, Surrey (now London, S.W.19) in 1894. She was the eldest daughter of George Merritt (right) and Amelia Hall. The 1911 census shows her as a servant in the house of and evangelist, in Brondesbury, London. George was a bricklayer.
The Merritts have lived in the Merton/Mitcham area for many years.
The earliest Merritt that I can find is William Hughes Merritt born about 1545 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. His wife was Ann.
