Missing in action

Where have I been for so long? Doing very little genealogy, I’m afraid! Most of my time was spent on two volunteer roles. I left one of those a couple of years ago, and the other has been impacted by the pandemic. I have been exchanging information with others who are tracing some of the same families, updating my trees offline (I use GRAMPS software) and a small amount online (I have bits of my trees on various popular sites).

I’ve started sorting the family photos which I inherited from my parents, and scanned a few of them. I recently found an app for my Android phone that works very well as a scanner for a quick “need a digital copy of these” situation. It’s called Scanner Free by Free Apps and Tools Studio if you want to try it.

Other stuff I’ve added to my toolbox includes Zotero, which is a research and citations software. This is available for Mac and Windows as well as Linux, and is free. A fellow member of the Facebook group Technology for Genealogy recommended Airtable, which is a cross between a database and a spreadsheet. I’m trying out the free version for contacts, timelines, and research “to do”. Although GRAMPS has a to do list, I can’t take it with me easily. I can log in to my Airtable account on my phone and access and update it there.

I’m getting closer to breaking down a major brickwall on my ancestor William Easter. Although I can find his marriage in Stow-cum-Quy in Cambridgeshire I can’t find his birth. He was 25 at his marriage, which was on 10 August 1700, so he should have been born in 1675. I have a record which may be him, and I’m waiting for us all to be released into the wild so I can visit the record office.

So, end of excuses, and I hope to be a bit more prolific in the future.
